Proper maintenance of your mini split system keeps it running efficiently, lowers energy bills, and extends its lifespan—especially important in hot Inland Empire climates like Rialto and Fontana.

1. Clean or Replace the Air Filters

Mini split systems have washable filters that should be cleaned every 2–4 weeks, especially during heavy use in summer.

  • Turn off the unit

  • Remove the front cover

  • Wash filters with water and let them fully dry before reinstalling

Dirty filters restrict airflow and reduce cooling performance.

2. Keep the Indoor Unit Clean

Dust and debris can build up on the indoor air handler.

  • Wipe down the exterior with a dry or slightly damp cloth

  • Check vents for dust buildup

  • Make sure nothing is blocking airflow (furniture, curtains, etc.)

3. Maintain the Outdoor Condenser

Your outdoor unit needs proper airflow to function efficiently.

  • Clear away leaves, dirt, and debris around the unit

  • Keep at least 2–3 feet of open space around it

  • Gently rinse the coils with a hose (no high pressure)

4. Check the Drain Line

Mini splits remove humidity, which drains through a condensate line.

  • Make sure the drain line is not clogged

  • If you notice water leaks inside, the line may need cleaning

Clogged drains can cause water damage and system issues.

5. Inspect for Unusual Sounds or Performance Issues

Watch for warning signs like:

  • Weak airflow

  • Strange noises

  • Bad odors

  • System not cooling properly

Catching issues early can prevent costly repairs.

6. Use the System Efficiently

  • Set a consistent temperature instead of constantly adjusting it

  • Use energy-saving or eco modes if available

  • Avoid running the system with doors/windows open

7. Schedule Professional Maintenance

Even with regular cleaning, your system should be serviced by a professional at least once a year. A technician will:

  • Clean internal components (blower wheel, coil)

  • Check refrigerant levels

  • Inspect electrical connections

  • Ensure peak efficiency and performance
